A great escape

Jem didn’t know how long she stood behind the cabinet. All she knew was that her legs had started to ache and that Freya and Fulla had worked together, casting a spell that would strip away all the memories of Hod and Elena. The entire spell was spoken in old Norse, so Jem didn’t understand a word, well, not a word except for Elena and Hod’s names. Once the two women had cast their spell they had discussed where they would send them, but they moved them from the room before Jem could hear exactly where they were going to be taking them.

Guilt ate at Jem. This was her fault. She got Elena and Hod into this, whatever this thing was. They’d been the good guys after all. Even when they were faced with Freya they didn’t turn Jem over. They helped her hide, and they told her what she needed to do to help Dan and Gerard survive. Head South. Find Lofntyr Manor. Jem felt guilty. But she wasn’t going to let that paralyse her. They gave her a chance. They’d chosen to give her a chance, and she was going to take it. Even if it meant she was doing it without Jewel at her side. It hurt her heart leaving her friend. It hurt her even more deeply that Jewel hadn’t believed her. Hadn’t wanted to believe her. But her responsibility now was to help Dan and Gerard, and that was exactly what she was going to do.

Jem slipped from her hiding spot, easing her body carefully into the room. The last thing she needed was for Freya or Fulla to catch her. The supposed Queen of the Aesir had just stripped the memories of her son and his girlfriend and was banishing them to, well the Creator only knew where. If Freya could do that to her child, then there was absolutely no doubt in Jem’s mind that she would have no problems making Jem disappear. Jem needed to get out of here. She needed to get Dan and Gerard out of here, and quick. Stepping out into the centre of the room Jem was about to race out of the room when she saw what was left of the prophecy scroll sitting on the hearth in front of the fireplace. Most of the delicate paper had burnt away, but portions of it were still legible. Or at least they would have been if she could read the language. Looking around the room she spotted a beautiful gold scarf. No doubt Freya would be spitting mad once she saw it was gone, and she’d be even less impressed when she realised it had been used to wrap the charred prophecy. Jem didn’t bother to unravel the scroll, partially because it was still pretty darn hot, but also because she didn’t want to damage it anymore than she already had. She placed the prophecy carefully in the scarf, wrapped the scarf tightly around it and went quickly back to her room.
